An Official Fresh Deal Staff Review By Justin Stewart
When it comes to online electronics stores, it’s really quite surprising just how many there are. You would think that there wouldn’t be enough business for this many, but somehow, they all manage to hang on. There is a big difference however between hanging on and doing well. Out of all of the available stores, there are a few that stand out and have managed to garner a good share of the market place.

Most do it by lowering their prices as much as possible, and trying to develop real relationships with their customers. When you are dealing with this much competition, finding a way to stand out is vital. Whether it’s a quirky concept, a cutting edge site design or simply really good deals, a store has to have a hook if they want to hang in there.

Consumers usually think about two things when it comes to electronics, price and quality. Most of these stores manage to hang on despite price wars, and it can be pretty tough to carve out your own niche. Geeks.com has managed to do just that and although they may not be the biggest store out there, they are one of the most consistent. They’ve done a great job of hanging in there through internet bubbles, and the current economic crisis.

Do they have what it takes to keep this up for the next few years? Let’s find out.

About Geeks.com

Geeks.com was founded twelve years ago and although they do have a physical address and warehouse, they are an online only store. This has worked well for them and considering all that has happened online over the past twelve years, it’s impressive that they’ve managed to do so well.

The company is located in California, but does business worldwide. They’re well known for their attention to customer service, and they do a great job of making sure that customers always know when an item is in stock and getting it there quickly.

First Impression

Our first impression was a little iffy, thanks in part to the amount of stuff they have crammed on their front page. While we understand that it’s tough to figure out what to promote when you have an inventory that is this gigantic, they could with paring down their front page. Visually, there is just way too much to look at it and it takes away from the quality of the site.

They do however get the point across that they are an electronics store and that they do have an immense inventory. One thing that we found interesting was their logo. The site is Geeks.com, but the logo says Computer Geeks.com. While they do own both domains, this could cause some consumer confusion. It would be best to pick the one domain they want and use that for the logo, and honestly, Geeks.com is probably the better of the two.

Despite these issues, our first impression was generally pretty good.

Site Design and Navigation

Despite the overcrowding, the site has done a great job of getting everything organized as well as they can. Considering that they do stock a truly massive amount of different products, it’s virtually impossible to let consumers know this without getting a little crowded. We would like to see a little more streamlining of the overall design and a lot less clutter at the top.

While they do place their important links up at the top right of the page, it’s a little tough to find them amidst all the banners and promotions. Again, they are a necessary evil, but they may be better suited in a different location. The individual product pages are also a little crowded, but do contain more than enough information to help you decide on a purchase.

Numerous images of the product are supplied, as well as information on related products, pricing, stock availability and the overall description. We did notice that they do not include any product reviews, and this would definitely be a nice addition.

Overall, while there are some crowding issues, the site design is functional and it is easy to find what you are looking for.

Geeks.com Products

Pretty much if it is considered a consumer electronic device, you’ll find it here. They also stock a wide variety of computer peripherals, phones, office machines, MP3 players, computer parts and a lot more. Far too many to list here, but they do have an amazing selection.

Customer Service

Considering the size of the company, we were a little surprised that they did not have a toll-free number. They do put up their contact information, but you will have to pay for the call. They could easily take their game to the next level with a simple toll-free number, and we were disappointed that they did not have this.

That aside, their return policy is a little confusing. They state that all sales are final, but apparently, non defective items can be returned within 30 days and are subject to a restocking fee. Which is it?

If your product is damaged or parts are missing, you have to let them know within 7 days to get it resolved, and if the product is covered by a manufacturer warranty, you have to deal with them, and not Geeks.com

Honestly, their customer service options were more than a little disappointing and very confusing. They were going pretty well up to that point.

Overall Opinion

We were actually a little disappointed with Geeks.com. We could have overlooked the design flaws, the over crowding and the lack of a toll free number if it hadn’t been for their very confusing and strict return policy. While you don’t expect electronics to have a very long return policy, you do need clarity before you buy. They’ve dropped the ball in this area. This was the one thing that we just couldn’t excuse with the site, and we really wanted to like them. If you do purchase something from Geeks.com, make sure you really want it or that it has a warranty.
